I am by no means a gym bunny but I enjoy any exercise that is social and involves some sort of ball. Lockdown has scuppered many exercise plans and those initial burpies, push-ups and 5k run have been reduced to the odd jog and 2 vs2 touch rugby in the backyard with the kids. The other morning I ventured out to the park rekindle some physical exercise and to get back on the gym train. Shock, shock horror! Pull up bar…one, twoo, threeeee, faaaweh…..done. Talk about lockdown shockdown. Disappointed I trundled home realising just how much I rely on hockey to keep my fitness and strength. Besides the physical exertion, the discipline of attending practice twice a week is an important part to keeping healthy and maintaining some level of strength and fitness. Interestingly, I have also seen the effect on my kids. While as a family we have made every effort to stay active and fit, the benefits of structured, regular exercise are difficult to replace in developing and maintaining core strength in kids. Without hockey, we have to do something!
We have no more clarity on when or how hockey is coming back. We have decided to take the cautious approach with regards to our training session and havn’t started formal sessions despite some other sporting codes starting up. While there are many COVID opinions and life philosophies, PlaySmarter is largely dependent on the school’s approach as we use their facilities for training sessions. However, we see the need to keep kids engaged and active during these times. We have teamed up with TCA and developed fun weekly fitness session. We want to stay connected; we want to stay fit and we want to stay safe! We will take every precaution we practically can. If you are allowed to climb into a taxi then you can climb on the gym train!
